Like many people, we have not ventured away from home since the pandemic began. Marian and I thought it was time for a change of scenery so we took a weekend trip to Vancouver Island.
We set off on a two hour ferry ride that carried our car across the Strait of Georgia to Vancouver Island. Marian grew up in Comox so we headed north to revisit her old stomping grounds.
The visit also included the small towns of Cumberland, Courtney and Chemainus. These small towns were once bustling with forestry and lumber mills as well as coal mining. Over time, they declined and
the population dwindled. But in recent years with growing tourism and an increasing desire to have a retirement home by the water, these towns have experienced a resurgence of activity and commerce.
