Shafer Trail: First Visit

My first visit to Shafer Trail, in July 2004, was a revenge visit because two years earlier
I had merely gazed upon it from high above at Dead Horse Point State Park. That gazing
created a need to set foot on the road and its environs. Seeing this landscape from a
new perspective was fun. This July day was HOT, but I had so much fun that the heat
didn't bother me. The road was in great condition, but I had to turn around short of
the White Rim Trail because my trusty Subaru station wagon had trouble ascending a
curving, rocky section of road. That, of course, led to another revenge trip.

Weather is hot and dry in summer; cold and dry in winter. The Colorado Plateau (the name for this geographic region) is is a desert-like area with little rainfall. Stream channels are dry most of the time. There is some snowfall in the winter. Vegetation is sparse. The temperature in July frequently goes over 105 degrees F (42 degrees C). Travelers in backcountry areas in mid-summer are advised to bring a gallon (3.8l) of water per person per day.

Dave, What would be the normal weather for this area. Is it a desert region, or does it have seasons ?.
