Sawfly larvae can be very difficult to ID. In many cases one is lucky to know which family it belongs to, let alone genera or species. Some are very distinctive, however, and are readily identified. Others, which look as if they should be distinctive, are often impossible to identify even to family. They are so varied and so colourful that they rival moth caterpillars,with which they are often confused.
