Album 11: The Hundertwasser Toilets in Kawakawa

Kawakawa looks like a fairly ordinary New Zealand town. Queen Street, the main street, is also "State Highway 1". Every few minutes you hear the noises of log trucks braking at the pedestrian crossing outside the little building that makes Kawakawa not quite so ordinary: the public toilets. They may be the only toilets in NZ you can enter carrying a camera without arousing suspicion from the locals. But these are still gender-specific; getting representative photographs from the east and west sections involved us in a bit of camera-swapping, so now I'm not sure which of us took which photograph or in which section. Hence the captions and attributions may be askew. But I have geotagged them, in case anybody viewing this gallery happens to be in New Zealand, equipped with a GPS device, and in need of a toilet. There is parking close by.
