This was busy big timber country once, but now with no school or post office, what is left of the town would be dead quiet except for the busloads of tourists at the Kauri Museum. Recommended as a great place to visit, where we spent hours learning things we didn't know we were ignorant about. Like gumdiggers. Also recommended: Accommodation at Matakohe House, almost next door.
