Rangitoto is a volcanic island a short ferry ride from Auckland. The island was formed only about 600 years ago, i.e. after the arrival of the Maori, who would have witnessed its emergence from the sea. Our tour of the island was by tractor train along roads built by prisoners in the 1920s and 1930s. The tractor stops at the highest point in the road and waits while the more energetic of us passsengers (that's most of us) walk up to the summit and back. One other stop on the way back allowed us to inspect the cinder-like lava that the island is made of. More stops for photographs would have been good: photography from a moving vehicle is not the best way.
