St. Josephat's Monastery


The 74-room tudor revival mansion sitting on a 118-acres was built in 1916 by industrialist J.E. Aldred.
After he went bankrupt in 1942, Ormston (the name of the estate at the time) was taken over by an order of Basilian monks. They have lived there ever since.

Morei neste paraíso por uns bons anos. Aprendi muita lição que carrego comigo ate hoje.
Sou muito grato com os padres basilianos que me proporcionaram uma vida digna neste lugar. Morei aqui entre os anos de 85 a 89, fiz muitos amigos e tenho certeza que em breve estarei visitando este lugar junto com a minha familia. Eu saí deste lugar, mas este lugar não saiu de mim.

Finding this site has helped me fulfill a void in my life. I spent a great deal of time during the 60's on this estate with my Dad Raymond Younger. We helped the only caregiver at the time, "Mr Sam" with the grounds and the only restoration (That I'm aware of) of most of the property's magnificent fountains. (I remember, as I stepped on an iron rake and plunged one of the spokes through the bottom of my left foot while clearing out decades of debris! lol) To see those fountain working left me with a feeling I'm not able to verbalize. My granddad, Cosimo LaMarca had worked there on the diary during the depression too. And yes, the pool table is as magnificent as it looks. Thank you sir ofr bringing this memory alive for me again!

can any one tell me about the house that is across the street? It looks like it was left to rot was it part of the monastery?

Great pictures. My parents rented the gate house at the corner of lattingtown road and peacock lane in the late 70's and early 80's.

James, How are you? I just went to St. Josephat's this weekend and tody I did a google search to see if anyone else had any photos "out there." Your name on PBase was immediately recognized!! Beautiful spot, isn't it?
