Mill Neck Manor


Known originally as Sefton Manor, the house was built in 1923 for Lillian Sefton Dodge, president of cosmetics giant, Harriet Hubbard Ayer Co. (later purchased by Lever Brothers).
In 1947 the house and 86 acres were purchased for only $216,000 by the Lutheran Friends of the Deaf. The manor house served as a school for the deaf until that duty was moved to new structures built on the property.

It was such a JOY to visit Mill Neck Manor via your exquisite photos and oral history. When I was younger, 15 to be exact (1958), our Luther Leaguers from Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hollis (Queens), NY, would come to Mill Neck to rake leaves and gather apples. Just to "feel" the great works you would provide for the hearing impaired children, made this more meaningful to all of us...and not just a "field trip for apples." I originally was visiting the Lorin Hollander (classical pianist, conductor, etc.)website and it mentioned that the Hollander family lived in MILL NECK ages ago. You have no idea how warm and enriching an experience it was for me to visualize the Mill Neck Manor of our youth. I am now going on 72, have four disabilities, but am blessed, TOTALLY, to have had 49 surgeries for Spina Bifida and polio and He has walked with me through all this convoluted journey. I am spiritually blessed to always remember that when you are faced with a "mountain," you can always go over, around, or through it to get to the other side. Thank you so very much for being the Mill Neck Manor that, along with our Lord, has shown that we are "our brother's keeper." Peace be with you as Mill Neck Manor's $uccessful future is in His hands.
