The Chinese zither Guzheng actually knows a position in China like the piano in western music. There are a lot of actual compositions dealing with "romantic" music like the piano music of the 19th century. Virtuosity and speed have encouraged this instrument to take part in many competitions.

On the other hand this instrument dates back over 2000 years, and only few players still kno how to perform the old compositions and tunes. While the hype about virtuosity pushed this instrument back into the peoples mind, the inner beauty of the old music nearly gets forgotten.

Today, artists like Mei Han look for new ways to bring up the Zheng into the 21st century. Besides new playing techniques and new tuning scales the Zheng gets involved in many different ensembles, orchestras and combinations of instruments. New compositions try to mind the gap between old traditions and modern demands for the Zheng music.

The syllabon "Gu" in the word "Guzheng" simply indicates its age, "Gu" stands for "old". This way, many instruments in China have to be called "Gu", like the "GuQin" zither. The special fact about China is that most of the instruments actually performed have to been seen among the oldest instruments of the world.

The 12 strings are tuned in a recognizable pentatonic scale. The roled up long ends of the strings remind one of the Japanese "Koto" zihter. The sound of the plucked strings is warm and fairly deep.
