The most of these images show Lahaina around 1991-1992, how it was back than.
Less commercial, preserving it's 19th century charm dating from
the time of independent Hawaiian Kingdom and the infamous whaling period.
Nowadays many of these charming South Sea Galleries are gone, replaced by t-shirt shops and Hollywood-like restaurants, which to me appear misplaced and not appealing. For example the former South Sea Market is now being replaced by a... Bubba Shrimp with a "Forrest Gump Bench" in front of it. Lahaina is not in Alabama, someone in Lahaina City Administration seem to have lost the perspective. I prefer to keep the former Lahaina in my memory. I used to return to the budget hotel "Maui Islander" because I stayed there during my very first trip to Maui, young, with little money, focused only on the discovery and the adventure. Now the hotel seem to have been converted into (you guess) "luxury condominiums," well in trend with the exploding real estate cost in the US. Images of the bark Carthaginian II have surely somewhat a "historic" value. This ship, not being an original bark in the first place, has been scuffled(!!) due to leaks and high maintenance costs. We have been told that it was sunk(!) someplace close by, to be used as a sort of an "underwater attraction" for tourist submarines. I am sorry, but I am not amused by this idea, and frankly I consider this action littering of the sea bottom. |
