Pomare's, the Royals of Tahiti

Resting Places of Tahitian Pomare dynasty, Arue, Jan. 13 2006
During our stay on Mo'orea we spoke with a group of Tahitians and told them about our intention to visit burial places of the Tahitian Kings. We saw on their faces an expression of astonishment and disapproval "why would someone visit the Pomares??" they asked. For us the reason is simple really: We are tourists and history buffs. This reaction was however quite typical for the position of contemporary Tahitians to their former rulers. This is so different from the romantic admiration, which most native Hawaiians express toward their dynasties of Kamehameha and Kalakaua.

The Pomare dynasty never brought a "greater than life" figure like Kamehameha the First in Hawaii. They never managed to establish their unstable kingdom in the international scene, like the Hawaiians did for a period of time. And to make the things worse, their last ruler ceded the land to the French for a stipend, and drunk himself to death, while independence fighters died in numbers in an attempt to keep the invaders out. Parts of Tahiti indeed succeeded to stay independent for several decades, foremost the island of Huahine.

Regardless the details of the end, the curiosity brought us here. We wanted to see the tombs and the royal cemetery. So there, here it is!
