Pape`ete, Jan 13 and 14, 2006 Pape`ete is to Tahiti what Honolulu is to Hawaii. This is the urban center of the archipelago and the residence of the government. The city emits European glamor and has a colonial past, what is the reason that many of the main streets in Pape`ete do not have Tahitian names. They are rather named after French figures or war heroes. How does "Rue Jeanne D'Arc" or "Rue Marechal Foch" sound on a Pacific Island? As of 2006 Papeete's official web page was still only in French, there was not even a Tahitian version, forget English for visitors... However, present day Papeete appears very friendly and tropical. Let us look how Tahitians and French will shape the future of this city. I have for once enjoyed the friendly people and I liked to see European news and all the football leagues in sports news, despite the fact that I could not understand a word...
We have not spend time enough in the city to visit all places of
interest or museums. These are merely a few impressions, which we
collected during our stay. We are intrigued, and we will try to
return to Papeete and to the Island of Tahiti.
