SHETLAND, SEPT/OCT 2011

This was my first ever trip to Shetland and a memorable one at that. I was straight off the plane and notched up Red-backed Shrike at Sumburgh farm then fired over to Hillwell for the Pallid Harriers as they had been hanging around for about a month. As we drove down towards Hillwell, the 2 of them glided right over the road in front of us, what a sight it was. Two lifers and I'd barely been out the airport 45 minutes. Made my first pilgrimage up to Unst the next day and scored Black-headed Bunting. Day 3 was outstanding, left the digs in Hoswick and went north but as we were coming into Cunningsburgh about 5 or 6 cars were abandoned at the side of the road. I pulled up and asked a guy what they had, he pointed to the sky and said, there's an Alpine Swift flying above your head. As we stood and watched it for 20 minutes or so, pager went off "Isabelline Shrike at Levenwick". So off we went and within ten minutes we were watching it. Not long after this I had my first Little Bunting at Geosetter hopping around the main track. My fourth lifer of the day was a smart Olive-backed Pipit at Break. I seen a further 2 that week as well. In all it was brilliant week and I soon learned how amazing and special Shetland really is and I will continue to return every year for the rest of my days. Other good birds seen were Citrine Wagtail, a smart male Red-breasted Flycatcher, another Izzy Shrike which was an adult, Rosefinch, loads of Yellow-browed Warblers, Reed Warbler, Pied Flies ect. I missed a Sabine's Gull off Quendale on the last day but you can't have them all.
