Another superb week on Shetland mainland with some great birds on show, this place never seems to disappoint. A nice RB Fly was Waiting in Sumburgh quarry when we walked out the airport. Moved on to Quendale and watched a Blyth's Reed Warbler running around in the nettles at the quarry. A few trips up to Unst proved crucial as we were near by when the Baltimore Oriole was refound so we left the juv Two-barred Crossbill at Skaw along with the Arctic & Mealy Redpolls, Rosefinch and the thousands of Snow Buntings. After an hour or so we had our first view of the bird sat right out in the open for about 5 seconds then it ducked back into cover. What a bird! Never managed any shots unfortunately but the image of it sat out in the open will stay with me till the end of my days. Eastern Subalpine Warbler on Yell the following day was another gem and a big thanks to Dougie Preston for finding it and giving me the call. Other good birds seen on the trip, Bluethroat, Red-backed Shrike, Olive-backed Pipit, American Golden Plover, more Arctic Redpolls and lots of Yellow-browed Warblers. The only sore point apart from dipping 3 Arctic Warblers, my bogey bird, was turning my phone on when landed back in Edinburgh to find out that a Brown Shrike had been found that afternoon at Wester Quarff. The worst part is that I wanted to go and check the place out and should have went with my gut instinct. I would have loved to have found that bird but on a better note, another one turned up in Fife the next morning so I fired over and seen it.
