It was another great week albeit a rather quiet one compared to recent years, but still some good birds on show. Managed to get up for the Swainson's Thrush on Unst after getting the call after 2pm, bit of a mad scramble but we made it just in time. Also had Pechora Pipit, Olive-backed Pipit, x3 Richard's Pipits, Arctic Warbler, Mealy Redpoll, RB Fly, Pied Fly, Bluethroat, Rosefinch, Barred Warblers, Reed Warbler, and countless Yellow-browed Warblers. Not so many Snow Buntings this year but had a showy Lapland Bunting. Had a few Short-eared Owls and Woodcock piling in off and I found a nice a nice Firecrest which was a Shetland tick. Lots of Barnacle Geese piling in and a surprise Lesser-white fronted Goose and Lesser Canada Goose about half a mile apart. Great-Grey Shrike was also nice to see flying round Quendale Mill. Lots of Grey Seals, Bottlenose Dolphins, Porpoise, Otters and a few Polecats. The trip was rounded off with a stunning showing of the Northern Lights on our last night. Never seen a sky like it in my life with every star going being on show including the milkyway and showers of meteors.
