BEFORE & AFTER SCILLIES, AUGUST 2015

We left just after one on the Wednesday afternoon as the Black Stork near Spurn was hanging on so we bailed down and seen it. The bird kept it's distance but we could see exactly where it was due to the stray feathers. There was also a nice Wood Sandpiper right in front of us whilst we were watching the Stork. As we got back to the car park there was a juv Long-eared Owl calling beside us. As we drove off, we had a Hobby fly by, Barn Owl sat up on a fence post then a showy Short-eared Owl was sat up on a hay bailer by the roadside. Next stop was Berry Head in Devon for Cirl Bunts. Managed to see a few but they were quite skittish. Had a 45 min sea watch off the point and picked up a few Balearic Shears. Moved on to Porthgwarra for a sea watch next and picked up the odd Sooty and Balearic in with the thousands of Manxies. Not much else happening so we moved up to Pendeen but it was pretty much the same. A nice pair of Chough showed well as did some Common Dolphins going close by. There was a Basking Shark and a few Ocean Sunfish not too far out either. On the way back from Cornwall on the Monday we stopped in for the Red-footed Falcon and we must have been the first people to dip it as it was a no show. Thankfully the Sabine's Gull at Pennington Flash showed very well after this and ended the trip off in style.
