Because of the very restricted quota of people allowed on Tiritiri Matangi each day, Gail and I booked the ferry over month before my arrival in New Zealand. Tiritiri is an island about 1 1/2 hours from Auckland where all mammalian predators have been eradicated. In turn, a number of species of threatened and endangered birds have been successfully introduced and are now thriving in the wild.

Once again, time was extremely limited. With a meager 5 hours to explore the island, we only saw a small portion of it. Extreme lighting contrasts and harsh light also made photography difficult. Nevertheless, time just spent on the island was awesome. I saw birds near extinction that I never dreamed existed. This will stay in my memory. Each of the birds shown in this gallery are different individuals.
