Near extinction, there are less than 225 Takahes in the entire world.
Due to conservation efforts, small numbers do exist in the wild on four predator-free, New Zealand islands (Tiritiri Matangi, Kapiti, Maud and Mana). There, lucky visitors may have an opportunity to see this flightless bird.
Unfortunately, even with the elimination of all preditors to kill them off, Takahes still are not doing well. They are having difficulties in continuing to reproduce and their numbers are again declining. Thus, their future is very questionable.
