Dubai has come a long way
The view from the 124th floor of Burj Khalifa, Dubai. Most of what you see in this photo didn't even exist 10 years ago, including the building I took this photo from.

Emirates Towers
In a moment of nostalgy, I decided to post this photo of Emirates Towers in Dubai. This is my favourite building in Dubai, taken on my last day of work there. There is something about the steel structure and the clean angular lines that appeals to me tremendously. This was also the first time in months that the skies of Dubai were a clear blue (instead of the normal brownish haze) and the appearance of the clouds announced the end of the long summer.

Fishing against time
One of the remaining stretches of the public beaches in Dubai. For a while, this beach was under threat of being closed off for further development, but after protests from residents, the Ruler of Dubai ordered that all development be stopped and the beach be returned to the public. Now that's not something that happens every day!

Clouds over the Fairmont
The Fairmont Hotel, taken just before the onslaught of rain. Clouds are rare in Dubai, the rain even more so. I personally prefer taking night shots when the sky is filled with clouds, which gives a more dramatic background. The wind was a bit fierce that night (as seen by the rapidly moving clouds) and it was followed by rain which would be considered a gentle shower in some countries, but a heavy downpour by Dubai standards.

JBH and the Burj
The architectural pride and joy of Dubai, the Burj al Arab beside the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. This photo was taken from my favourite bar, 360 Degrees, which is located at the end of a pier and gives a great view of Dubai's main icon.
Post script - I tried going back to the same bar a year later, this time armed with a better lens and more importantly, a better grasp of aperture values, exposure times and other things related to night photography. Unfortunately, the bouncer took a look at my Canon 20D (exactly the same camera I used the first time round) and said that (despite being a paying customer) I was not allowed to take photos of these two buildings since my camera looked "professional". My friends' compact and point and shoot cameras were allowed regardless of the fact that some of them had a higher megapixel count than mine. Duh!

Deira at night
Another view of Deira, the heart of Dubai, as seen from across the Dubai Creek. You can see the dhows which double up as floating restaurants, which are somewhat garishly lit up, as well as some of Dubai's earlier skyscrapers. Much of the commercial centre of Dubai has moved to the more upmarket Sheikh Zayed Road.

Against the odds
After a break of one and a half years, I am back to photographing the city that I now consider my home. So here I am, back in the UAE again, astounded at what Dubai has achieved, and still continues to achieve. This was a desert just 20 years ago, and thanks to the vision of one family, it has become a city that has touched and changed hundreds and thousands of lives.
