Kōfu 甲府

Capital of the landlocked and mountainous prefecture of Yamanashi-ken, Kōfu grew into prominence as a castle town under the rule of Takeda Shingen in the Sengoku Period. A major rail hub along the inland Chūō Line, it has retained most of the old walls of its castle, Maizuru-jō, along with a pair of restored turrets.
