Green Animals Topiary Garden

The Green Animals Topiary Garden is in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and it contains an extraordinary collection of topiaries with up to 80 sculptured trees.

It is the oldest and most northern topiary garden in the United States.

The estate in Portsmouth was purchased in 1877 by Thomas E. Brayton (1844-1939), Treasurer of the Union Cotton Manufacturing Company in Fall River, Massachusetts.

The topiaries were created and maintained by gardener Joseph Carreiro, superintendent of the property from 1905 to 1945 and his son-in-law George Mendonca, superintendent until 1985.

The garden is now managed by New England horticulturist James Donahue, a professional landscape designer, educator and writer.

The topiaries are sculptured from California privet, yew, and English boxwood.

Green Animals is now owned by the Preservation Society of Newport County.
