Like other amazing places on the planet St. Andrews Bay is not easiest of places to land as the wide bay doesn’t offer much shelter from the seemingly constant swells of the Southern Ocean creating a heavy surf. Once onshore you have to be mindful of the very unpredictable Katabatic winds that sweep down the glaciers at well over 100 miles an hour towards the sea. On one visit we had to run down the beach in a building dust cloud to the zodiacs to evacuate back to the ship as the winds headed towards us giving an "E" ticket ride through the building waves and drenching us in the Zodiacs. Scattered along the beach you will find Elephant and Fur Seals along with lines of King penguins coming and going from the sea. Upon landing and hiking inland up a valley and crossing a glacial stream you will be amazed by the sight of a sprawling King Penguin colony, the largest in South Georgia numbering over 200,000 pairs of birds stretching well inland up the valley to the base of a glacier. It is here we would just sit on top of a hill with jaws dropped gazing upon and enjoying the spectacle, that is if the weather cooperates and you are able to land here.
