Arriving from the west one of the first bays to visit on South Georgia Island is Elsehul a small picturesque bay on the northern corner of the island followed by Right Whale Bay on the north coast. Like nearly every bay on South Georgia Island Elsehul and Right Whale Bay have an abundant cast of wildlife including a King Penguin colony numbering about 20,000 breeding pairs and Fur Seals each protecting their little spot of beach front territory. Dispersed between them are dozens of Elephant Seals along with Skuas, Giant Petrels and Snowy Sheathbills. Lurking in the water one might find Leopard Seals ever on the hunt for a Penguin meal. At Elsehul Bay our zodiac plowed thru the choppy wind blown seas and driving rain while we explored the fog shrouded shoreline where we found some Fur Seals, sea birds and a Gentoo Penguin colony. Scanning the skies over Elsehul will reveal Grey Headed and Light Mantled Albatross gliding about sometimes landing on the steep rocky cliffs. Arctic Prions, Giant Petrels and other sea birds are abundant here along with Gentoo Penguins and some colorful Macaroni Penguins on the cliff sides.
