Charlotte Amalie, June 6, 2009
One day was hardly enough to explore the town of Charlotte-Amalie and do it justice.
Especially that a cruise ship has just docked when we walked the downtown, and flooded
the town with potential shoppers.
The towns merchants went into a "cruise mode" frenzy, prepared to sell as much
stuff as they could. The profile of the stores differs fundamentally from what we know from Polynesia, and specifically from Hawaii: Here the most of the stores seemed to display a battery of top brand logos on their danish-style massive doors, and aim to sell expensive watches, jewelry and gadgets. Their behavior was often obnoxious. They looked, or rather stared at visitors probing their intentions, and some even actively tried to lure shoppers inside. Of course, "your mileage may vary," I found all this completely misplaced. I looked rather for local artisans, and found close to none. By a lucky coincidence we witnessed a parade of Caribbean Africans. We do not know what was the occasion. We saw numerous dancing schools parading, and a "VIP" and his son presented on a truck, weaving to the crowds. |
