Makalu (8481 m) is the fifth highest mountain in the world and it is located in eastern Nepal. The trek to Makalu Base Camp is rather less popular than treks to Everst or Annapurna B.C. but not less spectacular.


The journey usually starts with a short flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, then a 5-hour jeep ride along one of the worst roads in Nepal to a small town called Num, at 1500 m. Walking starts there, with a descent of about 800 m down to Arun river, then roughly similar ascent to Seduwa, where the Makalu Barun National Park entrance is located. A few days trek then leads to the base camp at around 4800 m. The scenery is spectacular and wild, the infrastructure for turists is adequate but far from the luxuries of e.g. Khumbu valley.


Our trek was organized by Makalu Adventure and we did it in about three weeks of October-November of 2023
