Journey of Levitated Mass

The focal point of artist Michael Heizer’s new gigantic installation "Levitated Mass" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is a 340-ton granite boulder nick named “Big Rock”. It made its way from a quarry in Riverside County to LACMA in Mid-Wilshire in an 11-night trek through Southern California neighborhoods. While on the road, the rock is protected by white plastic wraps. Everywhere it went, hundreds turned out to witness its odyssey.
The megalith by itself weights more than 11 fully loaded big rigs. A special contraption that moved it has 196 wheels and is 295 ft long.
At 456 ft, Heizer’s installation at LACMA will be even longer.
Please click here to see it on display at LACMA.
