Two dichotomies, the huge South Coast Plaza shopping mall and the Orange County Performing Arts Center, anchor commercial developments in downtown Costa Mesa.
The South Coast Plaza is owned by the Segerstrom family. The Orange County Performing Arts Center is built on land and with fund donated mostly by the Segerstrom family. It is the cultural center of Orange County. With the opening of the new $200M Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on Sept 2006, it can almost rival the LA Music Center as Southern California's premier concert venue. Both the original Performing Arts Center and the new Segerstrom Hall were designed by architect César Pelli. This area north of the interchange of 405 & 55 Freeways is called the "South Coast Metro" by its developer. It is competing against the New Port Fashion Island and the Irvine Spectrum as the central business district of affluent Orange County. |
