Garter snake (R) and Red-bellied snake (L)

These two were curled up together under a rock. You can see that the garter snake is not happy. It has inflated its body to make it look big and impressive and it was thrashing around from side to side and opening its mouth wide. Since these snakes are small and harmless (both of these species), it was rather touching to see how much energy was put into this.
