Garter snake

The weather warmed up nicely by noon and I saw my first garter snake of the season in the woods. Later, in a different part of the site, I saw another one. I had my camera down low to photograph this guy and he reared up and flicked his tongue a number of times to sense what it was confronting him.

I don't mind this kind of snake as long as they don't startle me. Excellent image, closer than I would have probably gotten though.
