Garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)

This was a very small garter snake, perhaps 12 inches long, and it was trying hard to look like a big scary snake. Instead, it just looked very cute.

Great shot - recent research shows they actually have a small bit of venom that is neurotoxic - not enough to hurt a human but sufficient to paralize prey.
