Album 3: Burra and North

In the middle of the 19th century, Burra was one of the world's most important sources of copper. The miners,
the expertise, and the technology were derived principally from Cornwall. The underground workings came to
an end in the 1870s, but open cut mining was tried on a small scale later on, and on a large scale in the 1960s.
There is a wonderful mix of solid old buildings, tiny miner's cottages, a whole ruined village, and the remains
of the engine houses just like those in Cornwall. On the approaches to Burra, and on the road north, there
are many ruined farm houses, some just piles of stones and a peppercorn tree, others almost renovatable.
Some of these date from a scheme in which soldiers returning from World War I were given land and encouraged
to become farmers. It was marginal farming country at best, and most just gave up. There are pictures here of Terowie, once
a busy rail town, now not quite a ghost town. Other towns along the former rail line which disappeared, but Terowie is hanging on.
