Arkaroola Resort is part of a private wildlife sanctuary, formerly a sheep station, which the owners are working to change back to "the way it was before white people came." There was copper-mining in the area in the 1870s and more recently there was exploration for uranium and other minerals. This did not lead to any more than minor pick-and-shovel work, but left a series of four-wheel-drive tracks through the hills to the north of the resort. I joined a tour along these tracks through spectacular mountain country to a lookout over the plains to the northeast
