The American Sparrows (Passerellidae) is a recent construction of species that have long been though to belong in other families like the Old World buntings or the tanager.
The include 127 species sometimes called sparrows, sometimes buntings, bush-tanagers, brush-finches, juncos, ground-sparrows or towhees. They are small are smal birds, typically around 15 cm in length, with finch-like bills.
