The Cotingas (Cotingidae) are a family of 66 species found in Central America and tropical South America. Cotingas are birds of forests or forest edges, which mostly eat fruit or insects and fruit.
Most species are polygynous, and only the females care for the eggs and young. Brilliant male colors and/or loud vocalizations are the result of sexual selection. Many have striking courtship displays, often grouped together in leks.
The piercing and loud call of the Screaming Piha is a familiar background sound on motion picture soundtracks used to illustrate jungle environments not just from South America.
