The lithophone pictured here is unfortunately not tuned, and therefore fulfills decorational purposes only. In China and Vietnam there are several different types of lithohpones in use today. Tracing their origins still remains unclear, but they probably date back to the Stone Ages.

The carved stone plates shine in a copper-like color, sounding very high and clear. What first appears to be a metallophone reveals a special kind of stone which sounds astonishingly loud, due in part from the metal hammer striking the plates.

This xylophone is tuned to a special pentatonic scale which is known in Vietnam as the "bac" scale. Some pitches appear to be "out fo tune" for listeners who are used to Western scales; they sound a quarter tone higher than the approxing Western pitches.

The "Rana'ad" xylophone constitutes the main section of many Southeast Asian ensembles, most famously in the Gamelan and is even used very often in its wooden form for the traditional Thai and Khmer ensembles. Many different spellings for this name exist, for example, "Roneat" in Cambodia. The instrument shown in the photo is a small model with a length of 40 cm.

The "Pata'la" xylophone is the Burmese version of the southeast Asian xylophone and a very important instrument for classical chamber music, where it is used as a substitute for the famous arched harp, "saung gauk". It can hold up to 21 bamboo plates.

If we depict the stand it is quite easy to imagine the upper half hanging from a tree and the lower part bound around the players stomach. The "T'rung" is beaten with a pair of sticks with hammers on both ends, cut in the distance of an octave.

Most Angklung sets are performed by a group of people. Like in the Vietnamese Gong ensembles, each person carries one tone and has to know precisely at which time to shake his instrument. This kind of ensemble performance requires a good synchronisation between the players.

Egal ob Ensemble- oder Soloinstrument, das Angklung zeigt wiederum, daß viele Instrumente aus dem Werkstoff hergestellt werden, der praktisch überall vor der Haustür zu finden ist: Bambus. Im Ensemble ist eine gute Absprache Voraussetzung für ein gutes Gelingen, und so wird die Gruppe durch gemeinsames Üben zusammen geschweißt. Daher ist das Angklung auch in Schulen im Musikunterricht ein beliebtes Instrument.

The African Balafon is another rarely discussed topic when it comes to the true origin of xylophones. It can be found in many African countries, with sizes ranging from a half meter with 5 plates up to 2 meters with 21 plates. If we turn the Balafon upside down, we can see the resonating gourds underneath the plates. These gourds have to swing freely if supporting a tone. The Balafon is commonly tuned in a pentatonic or diatonic scale, tuning of the keys happens with carving wood from the middle or tip of the plate.

The "Shekere" is a basic shaker which has a net of little shells placed over the resonating gourd. Like the cymbal fork on the left side, a geographical origin for the model on the photo is unknown, but the instrument is known under many names like "cabasa" or "afuxe" in Latin America and Africa (namely Ghana and Nigeria).

This is a typical percussion instrument called "qarqba" which gets used like castagnets in pairs during the performance of the "Gnaoua" tradition which became famous through the festival in Essaouira, Marocco. The main ostinato of the castagnets gets underlined by the bass line of the "Gimbri" bass lute.

This model shows the authentic appearance of the bells. Each bell had the possibility of two tunes, depending on which side you hit the bell with the hammer. The bell sets a re hughe, the biggest bells reach a size of over two meter, a complete set can be up to 6 meters long, and the upper set of bells were hung up that high that a player had to climb a ladder to beat them.
