(megaceryle maximus)
The Giant Kingfisher as its name implies is the largest of the Kingfisher family to be found in Africa. It is quite common and widespread, only being absent in the driest desert areas. It was particularly common at Loango NP where we found lots of them. It is quite a vocal species with a far carrying harsh 'kaking' call and makes quite a splash when it hits the water. These photographs were all taken on the Mpivie River or in the Akaka inlet at Loango NP though we did also see a couple in the big river at Lope NP.
