Dawson City, a town on the banks of the Yukon River, and with only about 1,800 residents, was at the heart of the Yukon's Klondike Gold Rush which began in 1896, and its unpaved streets and boardwalks today can help you step back in time.

Located in the Yukon Territory of northern Canada, it is a drive to get there, to be certain, but lots of folks find it to be the jewel of the Yukon and a great place to visit as a destination or en route to Alaska via the "Top of the World" highway, or even a starting place to explore the Dempster Highway all the way to Inuvik.

It was business that brought us to Dawson, but it will be the wonderful history and sights and arts that will bring us back as soon as we can return so that we can actually be tourists next time. Two days just wasn't enough time to do more than work, gawk and photograph... with nary a mosquito to be found while we were there! Even though it is the "land of the midnight sun"... and truly is light all night long, with the sun finally dipping barely below the horizon at 12:37 a.m. during our visit, the days just weren't long enough for us in Dawson.

The historical downtown and its sights is eminently walkable and unlike many other tourist destinations we've visited, we were able to camp with our RV right downtown at the full service Gold Rush Campground, courtesy of owners and hosts, Pat and Dianne Brooks and their friendly and helpful staff.
