Selon la légende, la ville doit son nom à son fondateur, le Duc Berchtold V von Zähringen. Le premier animal abattu par le Duc sur la presqu'île de l'Aar aurait été un ours. Cet acte héroïque a valu à la ville le nom de Berne.
