Tampa, Florida Images Gallery (100 photos)


I served in the U. S. Coast Guard from 6/6/66 to 7/2/70 and for the majority of my active duty I was stationed in downtown Tampa on Coast Guard recruiting duty from December 1967 to July 1970. I enjoyed most of my time there but being the junior guy in a 3-man recruiting office meant 50 to 60 work hour weeks for me and so much stress that I developed bleeding duodenal ulcers and other physical ailments involving my stomach. I lived on Davis Island, one block from the shipping channel, and two blocks north of Peter O. Knight Airport. It was just south of downtown and it was a great location to live because it was convenient to work and downtown Tampa. The close proximity to the shipping channel, Peter O. Knight Airport and the beach at the former seaplane basin was an added benefit and I didn't have to drive far to be outside so I could read or enjoy the scenery.

Okay, very good, Jill, thanks for the correction. I'll change her name in the description. Time warped my name recollection I suppose. I do vividly remember all the termites swarming once a year and the wooden hallways having a ton of termite wings all over them. I guess we couldn't expect too much for $50 a month, eh? Fun times but I hated Tampa at the time and now I really like it.

Yep, Gregory was the landlady. Paid her a whopping $50 a month. We used to joke that if the roaches left, the walls would fall down. Mrs. Anderson was the lady that rented the apartment in the front of us on the first floor. I don't know who owned the building, not that I cared either.HA! Take care! Jill

Hi Jill! Someone really stepped in with some bucks and fixed those old places up in the past decade or so because they were like the 60's still in the 80's, maybe 90's, if I recall correctly from previous drive-by's. Was that the landlady's name, Mrs. Gregory? I put Anderson. Or was the owner named Gregory? I don't think I ever heard the owner's name, not that I cared, haha. It's great to hear from you.

Hi Don, I really enjoyed looking at these especially the pics of "Gregory's getto's". My, they did some fixin' up! These brought back some good memories of the military days....Doesn't seem that long ago. Hope all is well! Love, Jill
