I attended Immaculate Conception School in Hialeah, FL, from September 4, 1957 to June 1960 (5th, 6th and 7th grades) after transferring from St. Mary's Parochial at NW 2nd Avenue and 75th Street in Miami which I attended from 1953 to June 1957.

My Lord, how Blessed I feel to see these memories of my childhood. How I so loved my teachers, Lay, Nuns, and Priests. Sr. Regina was such a great mentor. As were so many others, Sr. Ligouri, and Fr. Nevins, Fr. Barry, oh my I'll be up all night now, thinking of all the wonderful folks at Immaculate Catholic School: (ICS).

Anyone know how in the world I can track down a teacher named ‘Fernandez’ in Hialeah way before the age of the internet?! I remember you Timmy. You took a lot of abuse from the nuns in the name of discipline. Sorry to hear about your addiction. I made it out OK and became a teacher, but the entire experience forced me to leave the Catholic faith behind. Another of our classmates also left the school scarred. He died in a car accident while high on cocaine. Do you remember flying your model airplane in the school parking lot where the buses loaded? I thought Mother Enda was going to kill you. I still have one ear that is longer than the other, thanks to the nuns tugging it. Roger

Hi Janet Lee Hedrick Barbre . You were asking about RICHARD HERSCHBERGER... I do not know how he is or his whereabouts, but the HERSCHBERGER brother who drowned in a hotel pool was JAMES (according to archived newspaper.) I also remember when he drowned since MRS. HERSCHBERGER was our Cafeteria Lady when it happened. She also tragically lost another son GARY in Vietnam. Too young for both sons in one family. I hope you find your friend RICHARD.

Hi Don, My name is Teri Pickin, nee Turner. Just found this site from Alvin Lederer. I grew up on 49th Street and 2nd Ave from birth to 1974. Went to ICS from 65-75 (K-7). My parents moved us the summer between 7th and 8th and I was so angry I didn't graduate with my friends. I read a lot of the comments and remember Mrs. Querillo well. I had Mrs. Acola (we called her lovingly Mrs. Coca Cola), Sr. Pauline (still in contact with her, if anyone wants her e-mail!) for 1st, Mrs. Clifford for 2nd, Sr Kate (Emmanuel) for 3rd (kept in contact with her over the years until her death). Then came the hardest years: Mrs. Q for 4th, Miss Moore for 5th, Sr. Liguori (now Maureen - also have her info) for 6th, and Miss Prince for 7th. Teachers I knew through then also were Sr. Perpetua (still keep in contact with her!), Miss Clay (ditto), Sr. Ann (taught 7th gr Science), Sr. Jo (she taught 8th and everyone wanted to get her!). If anyone remembers me, would love to get in contact with you. There were a few girls who were horrible - now they would be called bullies. But others, would love to get back in touch with. Below is the obituary for Brian F. Noel who went to Immaculate Conception with me from 1957 to 1960 (5th through 7th grades for us). Brian and his twin brother Bruce lived close to a friend of our family named Aubria McKee and I used to pal around with Brian and Bruce whenever my father, his girlfriend and our housekeeper went over to visit Aubria. The highlight of my memories with them was one day during the summer of 1958 when we rode our bikes from their home out to Okeechobee Road and then northwest to the Palmetto Expressway which was then under construction. We rode our bikes on the Palmetto's unfinished roadway from Okeechobee Road to NW 103rd Street/W. 49th Street and then east back to their home. Rest In Peace, Brian! + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + Obituary for Brian F. Noel, Stuart, FL Brian F. Noel, 68, passed away from ALS peacefully, January 12, 2017 with family at his home in Stuart, FL. He leaves behind his loving wife Debbie of 29 yrs., his brothers, Bruce, Norman, and Don; 9 nieces and nephews; many grand nieces and nephews, two God children, and many friends. Brian started at the early age of 12 delivering newspapers. After graduating from Hialeah High School in 1965 he joined the Coast Guard and subsequently graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Wildlife and Forestry. Brian became General Manager of Voyager Marine making unique marine hardware. While at Voyager he developed a patented "hasp hinge." Brian went on to form "Brian's Patio" and it became a landmark on US1 in Stuart for 23 yrs. Brian loved fishing and the outdoors and had his first wooden canoe at 14. Brian was like a fish underwater and could hold his breath up to three minutes. He often caught Florida lobsters barehanded. Brian traveled throughout the US and Canada with his wife in his RV for 9 weeks every year for over 25 years. Together, they loved and enjoyed the outdoors having visited many National Parks. Brian was a very giving person and believed in paying it forward and helping people on a daily basis. Brian loved animals and often nursed injured birds and animals back to health and releasing them back to nature. A funeral service will be held at Aycock Funeral Home, Young and Prill Chapel, 6801 SE Federal Highway in Stuart at 12:00 Noon, Monday January 16, 2017 with a celebration of life to follow. Even in death Brian is paying it forward. He has donated his body to the University of Miami Health System for ALS research. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Treasure Coast Hospice or Martin County ALS resource support group foundation. Thanks for all your work on this! I was in the first third grade and first graduating class at IC. Mr. Silva was my 6th grade teacher. I had Mother Francesca in grades 3,5 and 8. I had S. Perpetua in grade 7. I don't remember grade 4! I recall having recess by the chicken coops in the field behind the new school construction and finally being able to use a REAL girls' bathroom when construction was completed! IC gave me a great educational foundation. I am now retired after teaching/administration in Catholic Schools for 42 years. I was honored to start a Catholic school in Virginia and memories from IC days gave me ideas to build on. I 'm living in Plantation, Fl with my high school sweatheart, Kitty Taylor, who also attended ICS. When asked how my mom dealt with such a large class, I often respond that when returning home after school she BEAT me and my brother john to tears! Actually she never did any of that, she would put us in the FREEZER untill Dad got home,by then she was more relaxed and made a wonderfull dinner for the familyL.O.L. Actually her and I laugh @ the teachers of today saying that 25 students is too much for them to deal with.Mom is doing well ,still in Hialeah@83 years of age,and as great of a woman as she was back then.Brother john is in Orlando, Has 3 great kids and spends his time [retired from Delta Airlines] Offiiciating High School Baseball aand other sports.And that little kid that use to follow his older brother john and his buddies around,is now 6foot2 . and 245lbs. and has been an Ironworker [walking steel beams] for some 38 years now Ready to retire .Looking forward to more lines from all of you. Hey there everybody,like Jerry Stahl my mom was also a teacher@ i.c.s..She taught 3rd grade as well as 6th and then stayed with 4th grade until her retirement.Jeanne Quirello is her name and still resides in Hialeah.As far as Father Barry goes,He never got the better of some of us, and would always stop @ dressalls dairy after a funeral buriel and buy the Alterboys Icecream.Ive been an Ironworker now since my graduating from miami lakes sr.,some 38 [WOW] years ago.Are we that old? I think everyone I know treasures their days at ICS, I know I do...from K-8 I met the best classmates and teachers in the world, perfect years from '63-'72 it seemed, so hard to believe that current events of the time did not touch us (if we were lucky enough not to have a brother or relative in the Vietnam War that is). ICS was a sanctuary for those 9 formative years of our lives, where we truly learned that goodness is actually a vital part of a solid education. I love our parents that gave us the ICS foundation :)

Hi Don, My name is Maria Cueto and I attended Immaculate from Kindergarten to 8th grade, from 1965 to 1974 and I have all my yearbooks. I don't know if people are interested in pictures or info from that time period, but I do have them and would be willing to post if requested. I definitely remember Sr. Josephine, Sr. Theresita, Sr. Eugenius, Mrs. Stahl, Mrs. Maclaren just to name a few, and the priests also. I thank my parents so much for the sacrifice they made to send me to Immaculate Conception Catholic School to receive such a good education. Hi all my old classmates from ICS. I went to ICS from 56 to 65. My brother Tony Kenning preceeded me and I was followed by Jean,Robin and Rick.I saw a posting relating to my brother Tony, he passed away in 2002 from complications from agent orange.I was blessed by many a nuns ruler during my eight years at ICS.I look back now and appreciate each and everyone of the teachers I had. I also saw a post on Kathie Greenwell, her and Brenda Isaacs and I hung around each other for awhile. I now reside in Orlando and have four children and five grandchildren. This is a great site, thanks Don. I'm George Sanchez on page 5 row 4 5th from left. I went to Immaculate from 1st through 8th grade. I'm married to Judy Navakas on page 1 row 3 9th from left, her twin sister Phyllis is on page 1 row 3 5th from left. It was a lot of fun to see my old classmates. Thank You for this site! I went to ICS from kindergarden til graduation. Class of 69 I think. Father Berry was a tyrant. He thought he was the MAN. I'll never forgive him or the parrish cause in 72 when I wanted to marry in the church he said NO, get married by a justice of the peace and if i was still married after 5 years then he would allow me a church wedding. He played God, I'll never forget. I am looking for RICHARD HERSCHBERGER...if anyone knows his whereabouts please tell him Janet Hedrick wants to know he is well and says HELLO after all this time!

What a treasure I just stumbled on. I was Karen Ann Plants Page 1, Row 9, 5th from left or right (middle of the row). I am now Karen Plants Dalkin living in Greendale, Wisconsin. 1957 was my first grade year. I graduated in 1965 and the went on to Msgr. Edward Pace High and graduated from there in 1969. I married my High School Sweetheart, he was from North Miami High and we just celebrated our 40th anniversary. We have three children and two grandchildren, with another on the way. Thank you, Don. Great site Don, brings back good memories. I also attended Immaculate Conception from 1956 to 1961. My mother taught 2nd grade there, she was Mrs. Stahl. I served mass as an altar boy there with my other 2 brothers John and Phil for over 5 years. This was when Father Barry was pastor. I never had any problems with Father Barry and always knew him as a fair, just, honest, but firm priest. He was a no-nonsense man who expected you to conduct yourself in a proper fashion whether in or out of school, and a smart mouth in that day didn't go over well with him or the nuns. Myself and other students had more of a problem with the nuns, pulling and twisting ears, wacking us with those round hardwood pointers with the rubber tips, and of course standing in the corner, but again it was for getting out of line by not paying attention, unruly behavior, or a smart mouth. Again it was nothing new for that time period, and we as kids took whatever we knew we had coming. I mean the classes averaged 30 or more students and there was no room for mis-behavior of a student. My family lived on West 55th street in Hialeah, and we all walked to school with my mother, who again was the 2nd grade teacher there. My father was a free lance artist for Jordan Marsh in Miami at the time and did all the store ads on their windows and for the newspaper, the Miami Hearld. We moved to Carol City in 1962 when it was just being developed. The housing section we moved into was Realsite Estates on 42nd Ave. and 181st ST. We switched to St. Monica's parish and continued serving Mass under Father McCann, but went to school at Visitation Catholic School for a year, then I went to Pace High for 9th grade and switched to Miami Carol City High for 10th thru 12th grade, graduating in 1968. I started college at Miami Dade Jr. College, but ran out of money, as I had to both work and support myself and pay for my own college at the time. I then enlisted in the Air Force in 1969, went to Vietnam and got out in Dec. of 1971. The rest is history. Again Don thanks for the great photos, really enjoyed them. Sincerely, Jerry Stahl

Cindy I do remember your brother Bob. He and I were good buddies along with Wally Tryctha (sp), John Albano, Rod MacIsaac, Bill Figueredo, Mark Silverio, Ernie Falco and Tony Kenning. I went to Archbishoip Curley, UM and spent 30 years working for Southern Bell/BellSouth/at&t. Now a grand dad and loving it. I'm living in Tarpon springs Fl on my second career. Life is very good and I hope your brother and your are doing well.

This was moved from another gallery: Hey, I got some track on Monsignor Barry myself. We all knew the guy. When he abused me, he was father Barry at the Catholic school (ICS-I Committed Suicide, the kids joked) near my house. ICS bordered Municipal park, later Milander Park, to the south. Anyway, father Barry didn't sexually abuse me. He punched me hard right in the pie hole. This was maybe in 62/63, when I would have been 11 or 12. I was driving a homemade motorized go-kart around the school parking lot with some of the other kids. I mean some of the other kids had helped me make it, and were with me waiting their turn. I was the only one driving in the school parking lot. We had probably been warned that this was forbidden (like wanking) and probably thought, hey what the f are you going to do about it. Well on that one day father Barry came out there in the parking lot and punched me hard right in the outh while I was still riding the cart in the parking lot. I was not so much hurt, in pain, as I was in shock. This priest just punched me in the mouth. My dad would beat me, but it would be a rather formal and somber occasion. It involved a belt whipping repeatedly hard to the ass for something pretty bad that I had been warned would result in a severe ass whipping if I did it again and got caught. I don't know if I even told my parents about what father Barry did. The kids with me probably thought it was funny. If I did tell my dad he probably said that I, little shit that I was, got what I deserved. I don't remember. You could get away with stuff like that in those days. I just think that if father Barry did that to me for doing what I was doing he was just a mean, nasty little man. And so are a lot of the rest of us. But when you are a mean nasty little man and you pretend to be a good and holy man, it makes you worse than all of the other guys who are just mean and nasty and make no bones about it. Oh this is Mike Policastro I am married with two boys and also live in Georgia ( loganville). My sister graduated Immaculate and Hialeah high also. I was a "61" graduate,my sister a "62" and my brother was thrown out for combing his hair in front of Mother Francisca. I lived in the dade county section of Hialeah. Went to Palm Springs, and HHS graduate 65. The parish I belong to in Cooper City had Sisten Anita for many years, She is now back in Ireland retired but working in a community of 15 sisten including Sister Regina (choir director) and Theresita. Sister Eugenius (played the organ) died April 07. Sister Perpetua is still with us and also living in Ireland. Sister Kate (Immaculata) is retired but living in broward county and still does work at Immaculate. My sister Martha (Mert) an dI are going to help figure out some of the pic on the group shots. Thanks Don for these memories.

Don, Hi! It's Rina Vega from Ops-So many years working together... I too went to Immaculate from '61-'66. I had Sister Anita, Sister Liguori, Sister Perpetua, Mrs. Quirello in 6th grade and at times MR. Brenner. Our class opened the Church and donated the bell. I worked in the rectory in 7th & 8th grades with Father Barry. Mrs Nusitelli was the bus driver, we lived on East Hialeah in '61, she was super strict and I remember one day she told the whole bus " you should all be like her,pointing at me, she is very quiet"-what she didn't know is that I didn't speak English. Ha Ha!Graduated from Immaculate and went to Pace for 2 years then became a T-Bred. I think I went to school with Debbie Drake,I don't remember if it was at Immaculate or Hialeah High. Thanks for the site, I too appreciate the memories.

My name is Keith Quattlebaum and I attended ICS from 1955-1963. I had wonderful memories from that time. I didnt live in Hialeah, but Miami so I had to take the bus.I believe the drivers name was Mrs.Nusitelli boy was she strict. I remember Mother Edna and Sister Lourcoria and Mr. Brenner everybody wanted to be in his class and sit up front and to the right since they were the smart kids and had more priledges.Going to church everyday especially when they built the new church. Some names I recall Peggy Riscuto, Norma Padrone, Ronnie B. and his couson, Henry Baily, Brian Rueger, Marion. Paul L. LOL KDQ

I came across this site when I was on Classmates.com. You will never no the memories that just came to me. I believe I was in the 5th grade in 58. I grew up on 52 Street & W 3rd Ave. I had 9 brothers and sisters and we all went to Immaculate with Father Barry.

Don, My name is Debbie Drake, f/k/a Debbie Lavallie. I grew up at 5700 W. 9th Lane. Didn't your dad live across the street from us? I remember your grandma always put "campho phenique" on our cuts. We loved her so much ! And my brother, Richard, climbed up your tree in front and got stuck and my mom had to call the fire dept. I went to Immacula Conception school....I was born in 1954... my husband found this site. He grew up around Flagler Dog Track. We had 3 kids, and are grandparents to 2. We live in suburb of N.E. Wow! This has brought back a lot of memories. I was in the 4th grade in 1958 at Immaculate Conception.
