July 2016 - Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hialeah

4497 W. 1st Avenue, Hialeah, Florida

This church was built while I was going to Immaculate Conception School in the late 1950's. The church leased Municipal Auditorium (late Milander Auditorium) on Sundays from the City of Hialeah because the parish had grown so rapidly that the old church (rectory) was far too small for the number of parishioners attending Sunday Masses. I remember that Sunday Masses still had many people standing in the back of all the occupied chairs in the auditorium. I also remember the air-conditioning in Municipal Auditorium was inadequate during the summer and it would get so hot in the auditorium that I passed out one time while standing at the back during Mass. Some gentlemen carried me out and laid me on the sidewalk and someone used smelling salts to revive me. The new church made Masses far more comfortable than the city's auditorium.

Sister Regina....what a patient kind soul. I remember learning to sing...and harmonize and learn the flute...! How much patience does a teacher need to teach a class of 40 the flute!!! God Bless the KIND Sisters of Mercy
