Caesarea is a city on the coast, about mid-way between Haifa and Tel Aviv. While the new city is being developed, the ruin of the old city is now a popular tourist attraction.
Caesarea was built by King Herod the Great. This city was once dedicated to the 1st Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus, and later in the possession of Cleopatra of Egypt, and eventually it was returned by Augustus to Herod the Great. Throughout so many centures it had seen various rulers and wars, had been destroyed, re-established and abandoned a couple of times. It was finally abandoned during the War of Independence in 1948.
