Tallahassee & Hickory Hill Plantation

The photos at Hickory Hill were taken in the winter of 1900-01. Ridgway appears to have had two reasons for returning to Florida, the first was to do some quail hunting at Hickory Hill, the estate of Edward Beadel, and secondly to return to Punta Rassa and the Tarpon House Inn to do some more tarpon fishing. Hickory Hill, now known as Tall Timbers Research Station, was the home of Edward Beadel, a wealthy New York businessman, who bought the property in 1895 as a quail hunting estate. Although Moore referrs to Hickory Hill as being in Georgia, it is actually located in Florida, a couple of miles inside the Fla/Ga line, just north of Tallahassee. The Ganet Pond that Ridgway refers to is actually Gannet Pond, located on the Hickory Hill estate. Most of the people he photographed here were sharecroppers and staff from Hickory Hill. There are also a few photos from Tallahassee. Photo #469 is particularly interesting. It was taken in the middle of West Call Street, looking toward North Monroe Street. The church that can be seen above the mule is St. John's Episcopal, located at 211 West Monroe Street. The church looks identical today except for the addition of 3 stained glass windows in the bell tower that were added in 1987. Using Google Earth and entering the address of the church, it is evident that the church is the only building remaining today from this photo.
