Columbia River September 1900

Leaving Shoshone Falls, Moore headed northwest to the Columbia River. While the Columbia is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest with a length of over 1,200 miles, Moore photographed only one area of the river around Cascade Locks, 40 miles upstream from Portland. The Army Corps of Engineers had completed the locks around the cascades only four years earlier. This allowed steamboats to travel another 40 miles upriver to The Dalles.

Before heading to the mouth of the Columbia, Moore stopped in Portland where the Willamette River joins the Columbia. He followed the Willamette upstream about 20 miles to the Falls of the Willamette where he took a number of photographs. These falls are the largest in the Northwest by volume. They are horseshoe shaped, and at 1400 feet wide, are the seventeenth widest in the world. Leaving Willamette Falls, Moore continued down the Columbia to its mouth at the Pacific Ocean. Having reached the Pacific, he returned to New York City and got ready for his final photography journey which would take him back to Florida.
