Portrait of Majesty
Third Place

Skagit River, Washington

This is my favorite picture of the past year. It was a drizzly cold day and I was on an eagle watch trip, riding down the Skagit river in a large inflatable raft with a bunch of other folks from the college where I work. I had to cover my camera with my rain hat to keep it dry. It was dark and misty and hard to manage taking pictures. Most of the eagles were resting in the trees. But this one was seated on this log on a jutting piece of the river bank looking as beautiful and regal as any eagle I have ever seen. The picture came out underexposed but thanks to Capture One processing of the raw file I was able to save the picture. I love the way it looks like an exhibit in the Museum of Natural History. I love the misty trees in the background. And I love the regal pose of the eagle.

Ann, I cannot think of a better moment or composition to show the grand character of this revered bird. Simply perfect. Susan

Somehow I enjoy seeing this more second time around. The pic almost looks like its set up in a studio. Fascinating picture. The benefits of RAW........

The first time I saw this one I thought, "how boring, someone shot thier eagle statue". Then I clicked on the thumbnail and was shocked to find it was real! Hey Ann, I think you could sell this as a design for a sculpture to the Franklin Mint! If the eagle was facing the other way and then the whole image was mirrored, it would be a beautiful postage stamp! ~ Lonnit

Like an exhibit, that is just how it looks! This a very fine picture, almost like a painting.

Ann,

This is a great picture! I thought this was a studio shot until I opened up the original.
