Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC

I thought some credit is due here, especially considering the use of someone else’s artwork as the focal point of my photograph. The sculpture apparently has no official name, but is referred to by museum officials as "big man" and is presently on display at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The work was done by the Australian artist Ron Mueck. He is represented by the James Cohan gallery in New York.

This was not a preplanned shot. I was struck by the impact of the sculpture and wanted to photograph it. I actually waited some time for onlookers to clear the view. But, then it dawned on me that the onlookers made the photograph. I especially like this photo because of the stark contrasts on several levels. The heavily clothed man in the shadows, staring at the nude, brightly lit sculpture that is shiftily looking away.

Thank you for your comments. As I indicated above, the capture of the onlooker was an afterthought. But, as you all have pointed out, it was an afterthought that made the shot.

I agree. The guy looking at the sculpture really gives it a scale. Great shot. theFly

Oh yes, I like this too....very much! Having the real man there definitely makes the picture....it gives it a sense of perspective and stops it from being "just another museum" photo. Excellent work!

I like this too Garrie for just the reasons you stated. Also I like that it makes you wonder what the heck? I like pictures that pull you in and make you participate. This one definitely does that for me. Ann C
