4 Yapahuwa

Photos of a brief visit to ruins at Yapahuwa while en route from Anuradhapura to Kandy as part of my personal car tour of the ancient cities region of Sri Lanka in November 2012.
This rock fortress rising a hundred metres from the surrounding plain is a third the size of Sigiriya. It was originally used as a defensible refuge against invading armies. Today it is an archaeological site surrounded by tropical foliage.
Yapahuwa can be visited as a detour about 9km from the Anuradhapura-Kurunegala highway. Alternatively, Yapahuwa Paradise Hotel could be used as a rest stop or a base for a longer visit to the region.
