My Camera Collection

English:

I started collecting cameras around 1990. My main interest was – and still is – the reflex cameras manufactured between 1960 and 1980. I started with photography in 1974 and, in that time, I admired the cameras in store windows of Porto Alegre my birth town; afterwards in other towns where I traveled. The Japanese brands were already quite advanced and proposed gear at good prices. The professional cameras (as Canon F1 and Nikon F, F2, for instance) were very expensive. However, the five main companies proposed also good cameras with relatively low price; they were: Nikon Nikkormat FT2, Canon FTB, Olympus OM-1, Pentax Spotmatic F and Minolta SRT 101 (and close variants). Around 1990, with AF (Auto-Focus) in the market and most of the MF (Manual Focus) systems discontinued the prices of 1970s cameras became quite low and I started with my collection. My most used brand was Olympus and until approximately 2007 I used it quite often. I have a great affection to this particular brand and still nowadays I used digital Olympus cameras. With my collection growing, I used other camera brands as well. With prices going down, I could buy Contax and Leica R cameras and lenses.
My principles to acquire cameras are: they must be operational; low price, be well manufactured and have some significance in the evolution of photography. I don’t care much if the camera is well used. It means that they served well as apparatus. I believe that cameras have soul and it is good to know that they have conscience that, even retired, they accomplished their duties. I won’t be very long on the description of the cameras since internet is an endless way of obtaining reliable information about all type of photography equipment.
I strongly recommend two books, both by Ivor Mandale: "Classic Cameras" and "Classic SLRs".
