Mme. Cecile Brunner
A gorgeous little rose - Dick's mother had one growing and loved making little
posies with them.

Penelope
I have trained my Penelope as a large shrub, but she can be trained to grow over
fences and walls.
My bush usually only has the one flush in mid spring and these
flowers are replaced by multiple hips.
She is very pretty & sweetly scented in full bloom.

Belle Poitevine
A rugosa rose (referring to the leaves). A hybrid & fragrant rose that we added to
our garden about 3 years ago. This is one of the first photos I've taken of this
particular rose. It also has spectacular hips almost the size of a small tomato.
The name is from the area of France that it was raised, Poitou, in 1894.

Sweet Briar Rose (Rosa rubiginosa )
I actually planted one of these when we first planted the rose garden, but
my original plant died out and came up in another part of the rose garden
(possibly from a seed dropped by a bird). I had heard that the leaves when
wet gave off a scent of green apples, and that was my dream to smell this
divine scent. The briar rose is a prickly devil to handle, and I chop it
down each time I prune the roses - they are a tough little plant! This little
rose and another similar one, the Dog Rose lines our country roads - most
probably brought here by the original migrant settlers. Now many treat it
as a weed! Not me!

Graham Thomas
One of the early Austin roses, bred to look like an Old Garden Rose. Quite a tall
grower in our climate, but the blooms are so heavy they drag the canes down in an arch
which looks quite attractive when in full bloom; and the rose needs some help during this
time. Can be used as a pillar rose or trained onto a wall. Pleasantly fragrant.

Bonica
A spectacular rose bush in bloom. I have two growing, one as a tall shrub and the
other as a rose tree (on a stem)... a funny story attached to the 2nd one.
Dick and I were visiting an open garden and came across someone selling raffle tickets. I opted for the rose raffle and Dick the carton of whisky. Guess who won the rose raffle - me!
Dick was not impressed at the thought of having to dig another hole for another rose; he would have much preferred winning the whisky!

Francis E. Lester
A rampant climber with plenty of thorns and pliable canes. The panicles of up to 60 blooms make a fantastic display.
Suited for growing into trees where the blooms can cascade. The single blooms
are followed by plenty of rose hips which last for months.
Mine grows over the gazebo, but I have seen this rose trained onto rope swags.
12-NOV-2018
Gold Bunny
A very popular rose in Australia, especially the climbing version. Mine
is a bush rose, and unfortunately placed next to Elina who has grown into
a mammoth sized bush, towering over me in both height and width, poor little
Gold Bunny grows in her shadows, but the lovely colour catches the eye
every time the flowers erupt into a showy spectacle.

Iceberg, Free des Neiges, Schneewittchen
A very popular rose, the world's favourite rose in 1983 and I featured this
one a week or so ago showing how floriferous it is in full flight. We have
two growing, both freebies from one of the nurseries where I acquired most
of my rose plants over the years. A favourite lining many front fences
in suburbia. A disease resistant, healthy and robust plant.
13-NOV-2018
Crumble Bar
I assume this one gets its name from the honeycomb colour of the rose. A very low
grower, quite a neat little bush with plenty of small clusters of blooms. This
photo features fully opened blooms.
13-NOV-2018
New Dawn
We have this rose growing over an archway in the oldest part of my rose garden.
She is a prickly customer, so glad we made the pathway quite wide before.
I'm feeling a little better - at last and will see if I have the stamina to
do a catch up on commenting tonight.

A small section of the rose garden taken from a pathway.

Jacqueline Nebout
Although this rose is sold under the name "City of Adelaide" I prefer the original
name. A small floribunda rose with delightful little blooms in small trusses makes
a very attractive sight in bloom.

Weather contrasts in summer
This rose is Ekstasy... it decided to open a small cluster of blooms during the
recent heatwave, the last day of the heatwave (28th) was 39dC... compare with the single bloom that waited
a day after (29th) a cool change came through and the temperature dropped to 29dC. You can
see why I referred to the roses being fried in the heat.. :)
22-DEC-2018
Shady Lady
A colourful rose that puts on quite a display, and if you keep the bush
dead-headed it will repeat the display often.
23-NOV-2018
Iceberg
This one will grow into quite a tall imposing shrub over time. Also a favourite is
the gentle climbing sport.
18-DEC-2018
Fragrant Cloud
This is a rose we've always grown since our eldest girl Sonja took a liking to it aged 4.
Although a finicky plant, the roses are sumptuous and deliciously fragrant, well
worth the spot in the garden. Vineyards often planted this particular rose at the end of the row
of vines, when the rose had mildew it was time to spray the vines.. but this rose
isn't used as much now, obviously other indicators are in use.

Ellen
Another Austin. This one has stayed quite a small bush, though like other Austins,
more leafy than the usual hybrid tea rose.
Some sad news, David Austin just passed away aged 92.
08-DEC-2018
Purple Glow
Another fairly new rose in the rose garden, only in its 3rd year here. Added to
create a contrast to the group in this particular bed of roses. Seems to withstand
rain on the petals and so far doesn't fade in our strong sunlight. I can't tell
you much about this one yet.
08-DEC-2018
Desert Island
A fairly new addition to the rose garden, about in its 3rd year here and is looking
quite nice. I rather like how it fits into this section of the rose garden where
the colours are gold, cream and various tones in between. Not far from the gazebo
where the main climber is Reve d'Or, creamy apricot. The first few blooms last
year on this rose I was disappointed with, but now I quite like it.

Tutu Mauve
This rose resides alongside Blue Bayou and they compliment each other rather well.
This bush has taken a few years to settle into the garden, unfortunately its spot
is very close to a bank of native plants that act as a windbreak and take a lot of
moisture from the rose garden; but because of all the native flowers, there is a
variety of the helpful insects that help take care of aphid, thrip and other nasties...
we're very pleased to see TM is improving with age!
08-DEC-2018
Blue Bayou
A very pretty bush rose especially when covered with these blooms. The shape of
the bush is very attractive and leafy, but the blooms are so fragile they don't last
long, especially after rain or during a heatwave. Mine is bordering a bed of roses, as
the bush is not quite a metre tall and wide.
08-DEC-2018
Royal Dane & a tiny garden spider
We have quite a few little garden spiders amongst the rose bushes, one
needs to take care when threads are spread across pathways! Christine
may recognise this little spider perhaps? The rose is a great one in
the garden, plenty of blooms throughout the season.
08-DEC-2018
Dark Desire
A very new rose in our garden, in its 2nd year here and hasn't done much yet. This
is one of its first blooms on quite a tiny bush as yet. Interesting notes about
the various names this rose has been given that I found on Help Me Find, a rose name
finding site on the net. Supposed to have fragrance, I haven't tested it yet.
A good sign for me is that the rose has survived 2 heat wave days and not wilted
or lost its colour.
Bred by Tim Hermann Kordes (Germany, 2003).
Introduced in Germany by W. Kordes' Söhne (Retail) in 2012 as 'Gräfin Diana'.
Introduced in South Africa by Ludwig's Roses in 2012 as 'Burgundy Panarosa'.
Introduced in France by Globe Planter in 2015 as 'Madame de Montespan'.
Introduced in United States by Newflora™ LLC in 2015 as 'Dark Desire'.
Introduced in Australia by Treloar Roses Pty Ltd in 2016 as 'Dark Desire'.

Great News
I really like how this rose breeder gets so much colour into his roses, this
particular rose has a mix of blue successfully edging the deep crimson. Probably
the reason why he gave his rose this name! A finicky one to grow, it hasn't thrived
in my rose garden, but it has hung in there and each year produces these lovely
blooms. No added texture.
19-NOV-2018
Mother's Love
Given to me as a present quite a few years ago, this is a popular rose in
the garden, plenty of blooms and a fairly quick repeat performance. The
relative (sis-in-law) who gave it to me has a birthday today, so this one is especially
for her!
19-NOV-2018
Golden Holstein
A pretty single rose that opens in clusters... deeper yellow fades to a creamy yellow
as the blooms age. Average height just over a metre, a nicely rounded leafy bush that
adds a splash of colour in the garden.
23-NOV-2018
Crown Princess Margareta
An Austin, and a very large shrub rose with quite large clusters of blooms which
tend to be at the end of long canes. You need space to grow this rose.

Nora Cunningham
A rose named after a friend of the family of Alister Clark, the well known
Australian rose breeder. A charming rose on a small climber, except I
have trained mine as a shrub.
After reading Gill's comment, I wandered out to check the fragrance, and
they do have a strong fruity scent, considering we've had 40-mms of rain
and gales yesterday and overnight, I can still get a strong whiff from battered
blooms. A limb came down on the golden elm alongside this rosebush, minimal
damage to the rose garden which was saved by the lemon tree alongside.
Have been out dead-heading the roses accompanied by a noisy koala,
lucky for me I did take 100's of photos before this storm arrived!

Tamara
I've had this rose in the garden for quite a few years, but this year it
is performing so well I had to take a few photos for the record. The
blooms are long lasting on the bush, and I believe it would make a good
rose for the vase, or a bridal bouquet.
12-NOV-2018
Apricot Delight
One of Delbard's roses from the mid 1970's. A large bloom that really
catches the eye in the rose garden. This particular bush had a dose of
herbicide early in its career and took a few years to recover, and I'm so glad
it did, the colour is a lovely focus point in the garden.

Sexy Rexy (2)
Fully opened.
2nd of a series of 2 (see next).
12-NOV-2018
Sexy Rexy
This little bush we've tried to grow, and the 3rd time we seem to be in luck.
This is the first of two photos taken. Just opened in this one, and fully opened in tomorrows image.
We were keen to grow this because a friend of ours is named Rex and he is 102 years of age!
04-NOV-2018
Veilchenblau
A pretty climbing rose that is covered in these tiny blooms right now. It shares
a large trellis with a couple of other old (antique) roses and a deep red clematis,
and not far from a similarly coloured old rose called Cardinal Richelieu.
05-NOV-2018
Aotearoa
From New Zealand... a delightful rose, lovely fragrance & looking very pretty at the moment in the rose garden.
02-NOV-2018
Crepuscule
A tree of roses dripping down from above.. we have this growing in 2 places, one
as a tree, the other as a shrub... this photo was from the tree, so handy with the
long lens!
28-OCT-2018
Diamond Jubilee
A very popular rose for the show bench, not that I take part in showing roses. I
do belong to the local Rose Society though...
20-OCT-2018
The Dark Lady
One of my favourite Austin roses... large blooms and plenty of them on
a nicely rounded shrub rose of average height. Most of my Austins are
in flower right now... though a couple of rather hot days may affect them.
28-OCT-2018
Ispahan
A very old rose with a fragrance.. quite a large bloom for an oldie
only blooming in our spring on quite a tall grower. Hardly any thorns
and very healthy, very easy to grow. Mine is in a corner with other
oldies, some of which flower again, but not this one. It dates from
pre-1832 and has a couple of other names, like 'Pompon des Princes' and
'Rose d'Isfahan' Always love watching out for this one to bloom, quite special.

Little Scots rose - Irish Rich Marbled.
This little rosebush only flowers in spring, and is putting on a nice
display right now.
20-OCT-2018
Just Joey
A very popular rose in Australia. I planted this rose in
memory of a favourite Uncle Joe, and when his wife Auntie Bet died too, I
planted a Bettina alongside him.
10-OCT-2018
Cicely Lascelles
An Australian bred rose by the creator of "Lorraine Lee" Alister Clark.
A small climber that covers the canes with these blooms at this time
of the year. Cicely herself was an outstanding golfer of the day, she also
loved cars and was one of the first people to drive the full length of
Victoria's Great Ocean Road, at that time being no more than a dirt track.

Eyes For You
With quite a few travellers on board... the ladybirds are trying their best and have
cleaned up most of the rose garden, but missed this bush so far. A fairly new
rose in the garden only its 2nd season living here. Plenty of flowers on a rather'low growing very leafy bush.
I am pleased to report that after a couple of rough days of strong winds and rain that
this little bush rose is clean again - aphid either drowned or got blown away!
I will most probably photograph the rose again later on in the season.
10-OCT-2018
Vol De Nuit
A very tall robust bush rose, I don't get the opportunity to take many photos of
this rose because they are usually out of my reach; but since recently been pruned
there happened to be a bloom low enough for me to get a shot.
A large bloom and very fragrant.
10-OCT-2018
Pristine
This rose always seems to begin the season with more pink than its meant to have.
We did have 2 bushes of this one, but lost the other one quite a while ago. I'm
not sure if this one is still available in the rose nurseries, a pity, it is a
lovely bloom, and the choice of our son when we started planting the rose garden,
it has a special place for us. Quite a large bloom which doesn't really show as
being in this photo.
We will be away for the weekend, catching up with my 97 year old Mum.
07-OCT-2018
Sweet Sonata
One of the earliest roses to bloom this spring, each day there are more opening and
hundreds of buds forming. Very soon the garden will be ablaze with colour.
I am missing the macro lens, have had to resort to a long lens this season.
Glad to see the ladybirds arriving and having a feast on the aphid; give them a
week and the rose buds will be cleaned up.
26-SEP-2018
Laevigata, the Cherokee rose..
One of the first to bloom in Spring - a HUGE climbing rose, covers a large area and only
flowers in the spring, but so welcome! Here is a shot of the first few to open... my 100m lens isn't working.
22-SEP-2018
"Fun Juan Lo"
In the morning sunshine. A rose that is often used as a understock
for grafted roses, particularly the old style rose; but
it is an attractive rose in its own right.. growing to quite a
size and overtaking the grafted rose bush. I have a massive
one growing that threads its way through a very large shrub
rose very close to the gazebo. The blooms are on short stems
all along the cane and look so pretty in early Spring.
Our Garden in Spring and Summer 2018/19
Various parts of the garden including the major section which is the rose garden.
