Three Galahs
An altercation when 3 tried landing on the dish..
Oil painting.
Rainbow Lorikeets in the gum trees
A whole flock of these noisy little birds have been enjoying the nectar
from a pair of eucalyptus trees in full bloom, as viewed from our
front balcony. We can see them from our lounge as we watch TV.

A pair of galahs
Having a swing in the dish. They have been regular visitors and seem to know
when the dish has a fresh supply of seed & fruit!

Rainbow lorikeet
This pair check the dish daily - but we've had rain and often its been full of
water instead. Each day I check it too and empty out the water & put in fresh
seed if I think its going to stay dry long enough for the birds to have a feed.

The currawong
A bird who preys on other birds eggs and chicks and held in dread by many birds. This particular bird had a wattle bird giving it a hard time because it was far too close to the wattlebird's nest. Seen in pairs or large flocks, once essentially mountain birds the species has become increasingly abundant as a breeding resident in coastal cities. The name is derived from its chief calls - a loud ringing 'curra-wa, curra-wong' such a chorus is very impressive. In season they prey heavily on stick insects and nestling birds, they also raid orchards and poultry farms.

Rainbow Lorikeet in the golden elm
I didn't realise that the flowers on the golden elm would attract these birds, but they do. I just stood there in full view of this bird and it ignored me and continued whatever it was doing to the flowers. At least they're not nipping them off and making a carpet under the tree...

The red wattlebird
We have a couple of pairs of these in our garden, they're very territorial and chase other birds away from "their" tree with a very loud emphatic 'tchock!' They follow the blossoming of equcalypts and banksias, and as we have plenty of both they're content to stay here the year round. This one appears to have his eye on something below, perhaps another bird...

Rainbow Lorikeet pair
A group of these regularly visit the feed dish.
Photo taken through my computer room window.
Found in flocks, they frequent flowering eucalypts and gather in flocks to roost. This beautiful bird sometimes causes damage in orchards.
They breed in a hole in a tree.

Magpielark
Came up close to my computer room window. I've translated to black and white
as the bird is black and white and the gravel was too busy in colour.
One of the most familiar of the Australians birds, found commonly in areas of all kinds including urban parks & gardens, usually near water. It has a common name based on the call "pee-wee".

Galah
Amusing birds found in pairs or flocks, they like open country which border watercourses. They cause considerable damage to cultivated crops, but they also devour large quantities of seeds of noxious plants. They nest on the base of a hollow in a tall tree & line their nest with green leaves.

Australian Magpie
Magpies live in groups and live on insects and their larvae, also other invertebrates and small reptiles.
They are very vigorous in defence of its nest, it will harass and attack even humans who inadvertently stray too close. The bird often sings in company, mainly at dawn and dusk, and sometimes at night; generally its song is one of the most characteristic features of the Australian bush.
This is of a young bird who shows no fear when I walk up quite close to where its feeding.

Galah on a tree
This young bird stayed long enough for a photo - considering I had the wrong lens
in at the time I tried moving closer, but the bird wasn't quite so keen on staying
for a 2nd shot.

Sulphur crested cockatoo
I took this photo through the window as the cockatoo was sitting on the balustrade of
the front balcony. You can see some damage near the feet done earlier by these birds,
they chew wooden structures. One year we returned from a holiday and thought we'd had
a break-in, but it was damage done by the birds, chewing at doors etc.
I had the wrong lens in, but decided not to go and change because the bird would have
flown off & I would have missed the opportunity.
